Review of Versus (2000) by Cassandra M — 30 Jul 2009
I'm not sure what to say about this film...It was definitely entertaining.
Zombies, gangsters, samurai, guns, swords, more guns.
This film is all action. The fighting scenes were very well choreographed but what I loved most was that amidst all the shooting and slicing, Kitamura somehow managed to present well-developed personalities for all the characters--from the runt gangster to the cop that kept making odd American cultural references to the lead gangster who constantly made goofy faces, everyone had a role that extended beyond their gunplay.
Battling Japanese gangster zombies is a messy job but somehow throughout the bloodbath, there was a steady stream of laughs. I loved how the convicts' jumpsuits had the word "LAWBREAKER" written in english down the front.
My only complaint is that the movie was too long. There wasn't much of a plot to speak of so they should have been able to get all the battling completed in under 90 minutes.
