Review of Versus (2000) by Aidan H — 02 Feb 2010
Two hours of non-stop mayhem in which director Kitamura throws every genre in the book into the mix. Zombies, samurais, yakuza, vampires and martial artists clash in a forest-bound romp that just never lets up, packing gore-splashed set-pieces and fast-paced camerawork into a dizzying blur of colour and sound.
Despite its humble origins, Versus more than makes up for its low budget with some scorching fight scenes and OTT cartoon performances. Kitamura's nods to John Woo and George A. Romero don't detract from the movies' frenetic originality.
One of the most influential cult movies of the last decade.
