Review of Veronika Decides to Die (2005) by Lindsey J — 04 Apr 2011
Interesting idea for a film - after an unsuccessful suicide attempt, Veronika (Sarah Michelle Gellar) finds new meaning to life in a psychiatric hospital. Gellar upped her acting game in this role; her portrayal of depression was spot on.
David Thewlis was wonderful as her doctor, and Jonathon Tucker was endearing as the mute patient, Edward, with whom Veronika forms an attachment. I thought the budding relationship lacked sexual tension (I didn't feel Veronika's fascination or love for Edward) and the reason for her suicide attempt was not properly explained and seemed a little bit trite.
But otherwise it's a great concept, a decent story, and acted by an excellent cast.
