I have never seen the series, and knew this movie was backed by the fans. This is why I had to watch it. I am glad I did, I liked it enough that I added the series to my Netflix que. The movie never really felt like a movie but a much longer series episode.
I recommend giving it a watch, especially if you are a fan of Veronica Mars!
