Review of Veronica Mars (2014) by Re W — 16 Mar 2014
I'll say right up front that it's tough to review this film. I went into it as a huge fan, and for me, and no doubt most like me, I was just thrilled to see all my beloved characters one more time. Just about everyone is back, and the movie provided nice updates on what they've been up to, with plenty of nods to bits and jokes from the show's 3 seasons. The murder (of course there's a murder) and its eventual resolution were serviceable, but nothing out of the ordinary. In the end, it was really nothing more than a love letter to the fans, which is completely expected considering how this film came to be in the first place.
HOWEVER...I gave it a 2 because that's all it's worth to anyone unfamiliar with the television show. Watching it a second time (huge fan, remember?), I tried to watch it through the eyes of someone unfamiliar with the source material. Remember all those nods I mentioned earlier? Well, without them, there really isn't a lot left over for the uninitiated to enjoy. It's about as much fun as being the 'plus one' at somebody else's high school reunion.
And the way the romantic angle of the film plays out, well...
*SPOILER*.
...it gave the fans, myself included, what we wanted. Or what I thought I wanted, until I realized that in this film? As a standalone romantic lead? Logan comes up VERY short of being anyone worth throwing your life away for. I never thought I'd say this, but this return to the town of Neptune left me strongly in Piz's corner. And when I think about how much that upsets me, I'm tempted to change my rating to a '1'.
