Review of Vera Drake (2004) by Sixth S — 23 Jul 2007
I want to give this movie five stars... the main reason I didn't is that I feel it is too long. The ironclad Brit is showcased in many forms in this heartache of a film. You cannot help but love Vera's character, which makes it all the more painful when you witness what she goes through.
The question you must ask is 'How far would you go to help someone out?' Would you break the law? Would you go to the extreme opposite of the status quo of the time? Leigh's work is beyond powerful, despite the length of the film.
Perhaps the length is on purpose; I suppose the viewer is in a way being pulled along through the agony - with seemingly no end in sight for the emotional upheaval. Very sad, very tragic and VERY provocative.
I highly recommend watching, if only to experience Staunton's incredible work here.
