Review of Vera Drake (2004) by Christopher B — 15 Nov 2007
Normally, I have zero time for Mike Leigh's barbed swipes at moronic Britard stereotypes but this is as warm and heartfelt as its protagonist/abortionist. Back when the British working classes were moral, caring, hard-working and good-humoured.
Superb period detail in the accents as well as the fixtures and fittings, this homage to community and decency is poignantly directed.
