Review of Vera Drake (2004) by Duncan C — 01 Mar 2008
Imelda Staunton earned her Oscar nomination for her performance as Vera Drake. It's a true story of a seemingly sweet lady who unbenounced to her family is "helping out young girls who can't manage" - performing abortions in secret.
This film skillfully does not stand on one side of that issue or the other, nor is it it's intent. The film is about her family & those that love her coming to grips with her actions, and perhaps her own struggle with that as well.
