Review of Vera Drake (2004) by Adam B — 08 Apr 2008
A film about abortions in the early 1950's doesn't sound like its going to be an enjoyable cinematic romp, but Vera Drake manages to be so atmospheric and compelling that the subject matter is almost secondary to the excellent performances. Staunton is well cast as Vera, the old woman who was just 'helping girls out in the family way'. Her family are very well cast as well - inparticular her husband.
You can just imagine this is the way it was for working class Britain post war. Compelling cinema.
