Review of Vera Drake (2004) by Sharon A — 20 May 2009
Great movie. tough Subject. I love Mike Leigh's movies because the dialogue and scenes seem so real and not artificial. You should do some reading about him on the internet. Its very interesting how me makes his movies.
He Write and directs. Very Drake begins with the epitome of cheery cheery British happiness in the Brit middle class. Things go a muck with her part time job as an abortionist in the 1950s. Family turmoil arises.
Leigh;s movies are so intelligent and real seeming. Here he asks us to accept Vera and her odd job with a little too much ease. however that does not bother me. but is almost idiotic that she performed these odd jobs for long periods of time with no qualms.
+ This is a well acted well directed 50s Brit period piece that tackles tough issues. I suggest the Christian Conservatives and Pro Life Crowd stay away from this movie. Because they dislike this film and films like it does not make it a bad film.
It is a superior and brilliant film in every way. Imelda Staunton is simply fantastic and so is the rest of this ensemble cast. highest rating 5 stars. the mid 90s DVD transfer is poor by today's standard on my hi def big screen.
When they issue on Blue ray maybe they will issue restored version.
