[i]Vera Drake[/i]'s performances are strong (if a little overrated), but the story often leaves us empty-handed. For brief moments we feel emotions, particularly from the many girls (more so than from Vera herself, in my opinion), but often the film is emotionally hollow. Leigh's direction is very solid, though, and it's shot very nicely with a soft touch. [i]Vera Drake [/i]was a bit of a disappointment and will likely be lost in the amazing year that 2004 was.
