Review of Vera Drake (2004) by Mikhael T — 10 Oct 2010
I heard so much about Mike Leigh?s films and I?m absolutely not disappointed watching this as my first movie from his collections. Imelda Staunton plays as a cheerful and passionate mother and wife and a figure among their friends and neighbors. You completely fall for her but also wondering there must be at least a minus in her life. Well yes there is and it?s not just minus, it?s a mistake and it?s fatal for her life and the others.
Vera Drake is a hardworking mother and a tirelessly helping person for those young girls who have miscarriage played beautifully, amazingly, and brutally honest by Imelda Staunton. I cannot write any higher profile words for her amazing work in this film. The film itself is pacing carefully along with the life of the people. They work, they chat, they have the normal life, but it?s broken when the truth comes out. Vera Drake has no intentions of hurting those young girls and she doesn?t even take charge for the work, but instead her ?agent? played viciously and coldly by Ruth Sheen is taking advantage of her for her own greedy life. What happened has happened and it can?t be undone although it left some terrible remark. This film is really great and a must-see piece.
B+.
