Review of Venus in Fur (2013) by Matthew F. J — 12 Nov 2014
Roman Polanski is a master behind a camera and recently his work has focused on the dynamic between male and female, dominant and dominee and this latest installment in his long and prolific work is the clear paroxysm of his obsessions.
I'm scoring this film four stars because who nowadays is capable of keeping an audience entertained with barely two actors in a single time and space throwing lines at each others? The film is a tour de force of masterfully sleek mise-en- scene, exploration of sexuality and the tension between a man and a woman who learn slowly to know each others and end up reversing parts.
This film is the work of someone who is very good at capturing some elements of human nature, an experienced eye in the art of relationships. I'm guessing this isn't going to be your typical Saturday night film but if you are wiling to take on the challenge to follow it, you won't be disappointed.
This film reminds us that cinema is not only about CGI and spectacular crashes but also and before all about feelings and dynamics between characters. In the fabulous theater of life Polanski just signed one of his most challenging, accomplished, sophisticated and minimalistic work.
Excellent from start to finish and definitely very surprising film.
