Review of Venus (2010) by Sam M — 30 Aug 2007
Most movies about an old man rediscovering youth are ripe with scenes of running through malls , riding roller coasters and participating in other activities not suited the incontinent. Venus is not so oversimplified.
It is a bitter and funny look at a man who is aroused by, and obsessed with, a friend's granddaughter. Many actors are not keen to take roles involving a sexually tense relationship between a twentysomething and a man 5 decades older, especially not this late in their careers.
This is the time to ride your own status as a waning celebrity and commit to inoffensive family comedies. Thankfully Peter O'toole (now 75) is still open to taking risks, and delivers a brilliant and heartbreaking performance as Maurice.
It might not hit right when you see it, but its hard to forget a film this hones, funny and provocative.
