Review of Venus (2006) by Eden R — 23 Jan 2009
Maurice is a veteran actor living in London. His friend Ian, also of the same age and career, tells him that his Niece's daughter is to come and live with him in order to help him in his ailing health.
When Jessie arrives, Ian is less than impressed by her attitude and general unhelpfulness; but Maurice is absolutely fascinated by her. Together they embark upon a journey of culture both popular and high, leading to both pure pleasure that is equalled only by pain.
'Venus' is a film about the celebration of life, art and emotion. It's a delight to watch from opening to close. Its traditional portrayal of the elderly as sickly, weak and helpless is somewhat reversed here as we see Maurice and Ian embrace their ailments with blatant sarcasm, enthusiasm and expletives! Peter 'O Toole is a revelation as Maurice.
Not only is he a skilled actor; he's also got a voice that could move mountains. He deserved his 2006 Oscar Nomination if not the win. (which went to Forest Whitaker for 'The Last King Of Scotland' Which I have also seen) Leslie Phillips is also a superb addition to the cast.
His outbursts of rage and panic are hilarious to watch. Jodie Whittaker as Jessie is equally as excellent. Her abrupt and 'chav' like nature fits so perfectly within the world of elderly rascals.
'Venus' is a superbly witty, enjoyable and moving piece of cinema. Quality stuff.
