Review of Venus (2006) by Sanity Assassin ! — 20 Feb 2009
Similar in tone to Atom Egoyan's films, I thought, but not of quite the same stature (setting aside the duds that he has made). Peter O'Toole's character straddles the borderline between sleazy and just sweet, and "Venus" herself is sometimes naive and vulnerable, sometimes rather more knowing and exploitative herself.
Which makes it an unusual but reasonably convincing relationship between equals. Enjoyable, funny, tragic in the end, and certainly worth watching; but not in any way an exceptional film.
