Review of Venus (2006) by Allan T — 01 Apr 2009
This film is a absolute 'find'.
Essentially, its the story of a once famous actor facing the end of his life, O'Toole in magnificent form. We meet his friends and ex wife and follow his functional, impersonal trips to GPs and specialists.
He meets and falls for a friends young relative, and while this should be an off putting episode, what we see is a tender portrayal of affection that ultimately can't be fulfilled.
There is great warmth and a several belly laughs along the way. Venessa Redgrave, Richard Griffiths lend good support - while Leslie Phillips plays a very surprising straight man to O'Toole with considerable and unexpected gravity.
Well worth seeing.
