Review of Venus (2006) by Jennifer A — 17 Apr 2010
An old man and a very awkward relationship.
Venus (2006) - 6.5/10.
Director - Roger Michell.
Cast - Peter O'Toole, Leslie Phillips, Jodie Whitaker, Vanessa Redgrave, Richard Griffiths.
Maurice (Peter O'Toole) and Ian (Leslie Phillips) play a pair of aging British actors. When Ian's grandniece Jessie (Jodie Whitaker) arrives to help care for Ian, Maurice quickly becomes obsessed by her. The fact that he is 60 years her senior makes this as an odd a pairing as "Harold and Maude".
Although the huge age difference certainly lends to some uncomfortable moments, Maurice and Jessie come across as humanistic. Flawed, but not completely unsympathetic characters. Time may be taking it's toll on Maurice's body, but they have not diminished his desires. There is an element of creepiness to O'Toole's performance mixed with moments of vulnerability. Jodie Whitaker is fantastic as his object of desire and Vanessa Redgrave is wonderful as well.
Overall the subject matter and slow pace will turn off most. However those interested in seeing an acting legend in the twilight of his career might want to check this one out.
