I watched this movie twice last night, just to try and understand what the critics were seeing that I wasn't... This movie is fantastic. Adventurous, well-paced, funny moments throughout, and a truly ominous and intimidating villain.
The cast/acting was top notch, the story was a little basic, but that can be forgiven, since the action and internal/external struggles of Eddie Brock/Venom were fascinating. The special effects were fine, the critics were wrong.
The pacing was good, the critics were wrong. The comedic moments, performances by supporting characters, and post-credit scenes were all good, the critics were wrong. There's a reason that, at the time I'm writing this, the Audience Score is 1 90%.
.. This is an excellent movie. Ignore the critics, spend the $8, I promise it's worth it.
