Review of Venom (1966) by Jacob B — 10 Nov 2018
NOTE: This is being used as a substitute for the 2018 Marvel film since the main page won't let me post my damn review. Even this page seems to agree that it's a replacement for the 2018 film based off of the videos.
Venom has effort put into it, some funny moments, decent-ish action and a great performance from Tom Hardy. Sadly, Venom also suffers from shockingly subpar CGI - why bother animating mouth movement when all the symbiotes appear to be constantly smiling even when they aren't? -, extremely fast pacing making the movie feel much shorter than it really is and a PG-13 rating. From what I heard, the movie was going to be R-rated before the Sony/Disney drama put an end to it despite their attempts to claim "so that we don't look like we're riding off of Deadpool's coattails, especially since he actually IS a Disney character now". It's kinda clear that the PG-13 rating wasn't always the plan. There's also a pointless romantic subplot with Michelle Williams as Eddie Brock's ex-fiance. I don't care about her. Especially since the dynamic between Eddie and the symbiote is already entertaining enough thanks to apparent homoerotic subtext. There's a mid-credits scene that's a 5-minute clip from Into the Spider-Verse and sadly, I thought it was better than the rest of the movie. Venom isn't bad but they should've kept the R rating. Still a better Venom movie than Spider-Man 3, however.
