Review of Vengeance Is Mine (1979) by Al M — 23 Aug 2008
The more I see of Imamura's work the more I admire his skill; he is a supremely gifted observer of the lower rungs of human experience in a way that neither panders nor exploits. His great empathy for all of his characters, no matter how flawed, never fails to shine through, and nowhere is his unique brand of cinema on display better than in the Oedipal minefield of this film.
Absolutely first-class in every respect; even if you think you don't want to see just another true-crime story, make sure you see this.
