Review of Vengeance Is Mine (1979) by Alexander J — 25 Aug 2009
It speaks for the movie that as a viewer, one cannot stop watching and following Iwao Enokizu, a mass murderer fleeing from the police. Imamura masterfully manages to portray "the other side" of society, the dark forces that drive some people to the brink of crimes (and beyond that) and why they are who they are.
Even though a little bit too long, "Vengeance Is Mine" delivers its powerful message - it widens one's horizon, it allows you to dig deeper into the soul of man. Unlike Ebert, who attributes no depth to Ogata's character, although they are scarce, I do see some glimpses of humour and humanity in the killer.
