Review of Vengeance Is Mine (1979) by Noel V — 14 May 2008
Makes Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer look small-minded and unimaginative. While John McNaughton's film is easily the best American example of the genre in recent years, Imamura's takes wilder, more daring (to the point of insane) leaps, tossing voyeurism, prostitution, blasphemy, and incest into the mix, and demonstrating once and for all that true horror isn't physical--aren't achieved by knife or gun--but all emanate from the perversities of the human heart.
A great film.
