Review of Velvet Goldmine (1998) by Craig G — 16 Jan 2008
Not as exciting as glam musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch or as clever as pseudo-doc 24 Hour Party People, Velvet Goldmine fictionalizes what appears to be a romance between David Bowie and Iggy Pop. I have heard that Bowie was extremely upset during the production of the film, so director Todd Haynes changed the names and then laid the romance on even thicker. I've read a little bit about Bowie's time with Iggy in the 70's, and the film did capture that mystique (though Macgregor looks less like Pop than he does Kurt Cobain).
It's a treat to watch, but I didn't particularly find myself caring for any of the characters, which I can't say for the two other films I mentioned. Velvet Goldmine is admirable, but not a great success.
