Review of Velvet Goldmine (1998) by Kayleigh F — 24 May 2008
A visual trip with a badass soundtrack. Wildean aesthetics filtered through blistering seventies glam-rock and high camp. The four lead actors couldn't be better. Bale is solid as the main figure of audience identification, while Rhys-Meyers works wonders with a tricky part: his Brian Slade is often opaque in his flamboyant glamour, and sometimes chillingly cruel, yet haunted and wounded behind the facade.
Toni Colette, meanwhile, should have won a bunch of supporting actress awards.
