Review of Velvet Goldmine (1998) by Kevin B — 24 Aug 2008
winner, Special Jury Prize for Artistic Contribution at Cannes.
references glam-relevant films like "Performance" and "The Man Who Fell to Earth" (1976); while, like the '60s work of Alan Resnais, uses memory and desire to advance a complex narrative.
characters are little distillations of real-life people and the stories they wove around themselves in their personas; biographies of David Bowie and Oscar Wilde blended together.
What is (American Independent) Cinema? homage to Citizen Kane (Orson Welles, 1941)--structurally.
