Review of Velvet Goldmine (1998) by Sarah O — 13 Oct 2008
Director Todd Haynes has made pop spectacles his specialty and this is his first. A rock quasi-musical that channels the story of David Bowie and Iggy Pop in the hey day of the glam rock scene. (Bowie completely washed his hands of the film not allowing the producers to use his music but more power to the makers of the film- they made their own music It kicks ass as does the soundtrack) The plot takes its structure from Citizen Kane complete with homages.
But the driving creative force of the film is the idea of rock stars and entertainers as gods and goddesses- an idea that's practically extinct in this reality-TV-You-Tube anyone-can-be-famous age.
Mythical, surrealist, and gorgeous- Velvet Goldmine has inspiration for days.
