Review of Velvet Goldmine (1998) by Chris M — 21 Jun 2009
I agree with what Robert C says in his review. I really wanted to like this more than I actually did. Todd Haynes has a wonderful eye, and can really handle the music and musical performances. It even has Iggy Pop writing songs for the film and Radiohead performing...
The good stuff: all the musical elements - live shows and the videos. Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Ewan McGregor are terrific. And I liked Christian Bale's teenage androgyny (much more than his 80's grumpiness).
BUT... it just felt like a bit of a mess. The story (such as it was) was all over the place and I gave up caring before the end. But watch it for the great evocation of 1970s Glam Rock.
