Review of Velvet Goldmine (1998) by Mark H — 21 Oct 2009
Glamourous. The characters, the music, the glam-rock scene, it's all glamourous. I'm not much into glam rock (read: I dislike it), but I really admire the work the film-makers did here, especially the wide references of glam-rockers and their works.
I think it's a sin, but I have to admit that I've never seen such a glamourous beauty like Brian Slade. I don't know why he intrigued me so much. Maybe because I saw in him an innocent quality that appealed to me. Always yearning for love, for eternal youth, for something he couldn't be, never knowing how to express himself, Brian in so many ways reminds me of Dorian Gray. And to think that Jonathan Rhys Meyers was only 20 when he portrayed that role... really admirable!
