Review of Velvet Goldmine (1998) by Gordon I — 05 Oct 2013
I like the glam rock era, and 'Velvet Goldmine' manages to capture the look and feel of a lot of it, but the story its visuals are draped on is uninteresting and over-long. Song covers bring to mind the classic originals; the downside is, they're not nearly as good.
Finally, the actors look like they're having fun playing dress-up and channeling the spirit, but no characters or performances in the film are memorable. If any one of these pieces had come together, the film might have worked -- it kind of doesn't, though.
