Review of Velvet Goldmine (1998) by Mack E — 08 Jan 2008
If you haven't seen it....
GO GET IT NOW!!
Seriously. Great art house flick. Beautifully shot. Makeup and costumes are top notch and it's got an all star cast.
If you wanna see a great flick about the Glam Rock era (and loosely based on the lives of David Bowie & Iggy Pop), you'll definitely enjoy it.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the 'David Bowie' character - Brian Slade/Maxwell Demon (Demon being the film's take off of Bowie's Ziggy Stardust...DUH).
Ewan McGregor as Curt Wilde, the 'Iggy Pop' character.
And finally Christian Bale stars as a former glam rock fanboy who is now a journalist trying to get to the bottom of the mysterious disappearance of Brian Slade...
Toni Collette is also fantastic as Brian's wife, a somewhat tortured soul in her own right.
Contains numerous references to Bowie's career, which if you are a Bowie fan you will definitely pick up on.
Freaking phenomenal.
But if you are at all squeamish about two boys making out and getting down and dirty...it probably isn't for you..
But if you are like me and it doesn't...pop it in the DVD player and enjoy. It's got a KILLER soundtrack.
