Review of Vanity Fair (2004) by Robert T — 29 Dec 2007
An interesting twist to an old English novel. Though kind of similar to Jane Austen novels, the story and plot in this film involve a strong, but sometime weak, peasant girl. The film started off well with the introduction of the environment at the time, and to my surprised, the film got better toward the middle.
But sadly, it went downhill toward the end, and the ending was a little mediocre. After the strong beginning and middle section, the film just got bad, and sometime to the point, boring. The acting from the cast was respectable, but it was an obstacle for me to see and hear Reese Witherspoon as an English lady, but I have to give her some kudos, she was convincing, to an extent.
I really enjoyed the scenes that incorporated the South Indian culture. Overall, the film was enjoyable, but I don't think I would want to sit through this 141 min. movie again -- only if I have no other choice.
