Review of Vanishing Point (1971) by Stephen M — 17 Jul 2007
The movie begins with just a white Dodge Challenger hauling fuckin ass and a supercool guy behind the wheel, popping pills and not looking back. As it unfolds, though, the movie tells an engorssing story of a man who's seen too much pain in his life, and his attempt to speed away from his memories.
Cleavon Little is a blind radio DJ acting as a beacon for Barry Newman's driver. I can watch this movie over and over - there's something about it that warrants repeat viewings. It's gotten a lot of attention lately due to Tarantino's nod to it in Grindhouse, but don't be confused: Vanishing Point is NOT an exploitation film by any stretch of the imagination.
A great movie!
