Review of Vanishing on 7th Street (2010) by Applebee T — 25 May 2011
What went wrong here? Anderson has some great movies and TV credits to his name (Transsiberian, The Machinist, The Wire, Treme etc.) but has come adrift with this implausible post-apocalypse horror. While other films of this ilk can get away with little or no explanation of what caused the depopulation of the world, Vo7S just doesn't have the requisite amount of mystery to carry it off and it this lack of explanation that derails the plot.
Despite an initially creepy opening (and a shock that made me jump clear out of my seat), the increasingly ineffective shadowy FX were far too repetitive to carry the film and the characters too lightweight to empathise with.
Respect to the actors who attempt to inject some drama into the mundane proceedings but the lack of motivation ('going to Chicago. Anyone coming?') leaves them little to work with. The terrible ending seems to beg for a sequel but on the evidence of this movie, no-one will care if it never gets made.
A wasted opportunity. Star for the first 20 minutes.
