I think there must have been a more substantial screenplay that got pared and pared down to a dumb nubbin. It's not just that the premise and its follow through is grossly under-explained, but also that there are inexplicable lapses of logic and inconsistencies with what is offered.

(Hayden Christensen to his agent: I was in two of the highest grossest movies of all time! I was freakin' Darth Vader! And THIS crap is the best thing you can find for me??).
