Review of Vanilla Sky (2001) by Mikael K — 24 Jul 2010
Usually films with this kind of story structure get me completely excited. Whenever reality is twisted, conflicting interpretations are simultaneously supported or the focus is inside the characters' heads as opposed to the outside world I'm usually sold. But not this time around.
There are elements in "Vanilla Sky" that are brilliant, but it seems like somebody has intentionally sabotaged the script. The dialog is awful at times, and every possible minute of the film that remains free from the machinations of the plot are filled with corny clichés and akward romantic babble.
And then there's Mr. Cruise. He's just so completely annoying there's no limit to it! Even usually reliable Penelope Cruz seems to falter here, prpbably absorbing too much of Cruise's badness.
