Review of Vanilla Sky (2001) by Kimberly E — 06 Nov 2010
It is a movie that I think was marketed terribly wrong.
From the trailer it looks like it's a bunch of hot people doing it and going through a love triangle or love polygon. It appears to be pretty brainless and light hearted which is in fact the opposite of what the movie is like.
It is a dark, mind bending psychological romance/thriller that will challenge your perceptions and memory. It is a movie that you really need to watch twice in order to be able to analyze it properly.
Vanilla Sky is a genuine love story in which the characters don't worry about who likes who more and just fall. There are many impressively believable characters in the film down to the best friend that never gets the girl to the hot guy who thinks he can run through one more emotional red light without getting caught.
Penelope Cruz is completely loveable and adorable - I don't know how anyone can watch this movie and not fall in love with her. Cameron Diaz manages to appear desperate and creepy in some of her best work and this is my favorite performance of Tom Cruise's career by a mile.
You may hate the protagonist in this film and if that will prevent you from enjoying the movie then I'm sure it will disappoint you, which is quite disappointing to me.
