Review of Vanilla Sky (2001) by Tara M — 09 Dec 2012
How did this movie not do better? It's one of the greatest movies in recent times and it drastically improves upon the original.
Maybe most people thought it was going to be another typical "tom cruise" movie? Maybe most were stuck with the original in mind? Yet, Tom Cruise was outstanding in this film and so was Penelope Cruz - actually I think it must have been the real chemistry between the two that helped make their performances unusually good.
The critics severely bashed this film too; as if most of them did not get the film themselves. I would like to understand the dynamics behind how such a great film could be bashed by critics and ignored by moviegoers. Was it just a case of highly unfortunate timing? Did the producers do something to offend the critics?
The best theory is that this film be watched multiple times before it can be fully appreciated. However, if replay-ability is a bad thing, the industry must be offtrack. Does the industry now consider a good movie to be one that must only be watched once, fully understood, and then experience is over? That would be quite shallow and simplistic.
