Review of Vanilla Sky (2001) by Orpheus A — 02 Aug 2012
First off I love the Spanish original 'Abre Los Ojos' (Open Your Eyes) so that isn't exactly a great place to start with a Hollywood remake is it? And its basically a shot by shot remake of the original, although all sense of suspense, ambiguity and exceptional performances have been severed and replaced with lazy pop cultural references and melodrama in what is basically yet another narcissistic star vehicle (for Tom Crusie).
Even Penelope Cruz, who here reprises her role from the original has all sweet, eloquence removed and replaced with bland variation on what had come before. Don't get me started on Crowes hyper stylized direction and the god awful 90's MTV music video look of the film either.
