Review of Van Helsing (2004) by Bradley W — 23 Jun 2012
Van Helsing is such a mess of a film that I don't even know where to start. Stephen Sommers has created a film that almost entirely focuses on the visual instead of anything else. The film is trying to be entertaining, and I will give it that.
Its harmless action that is trying to do nothing but keep us excited. But the story should not suffer in the process. I didn't care what happened in the movie and they take a promisable premise and ruin it with excessive visuals, boring acting, and many cliches.
Hugh Jackman is playing himself, he does not change anything up, he is just playing the role he plays in every movie. Kate Beckinsale bores us with her overacting and just trying to be so memorable, but she ends up being forgettable.
Like I said, the visuals are fun and I enjoyed some of the action scenes, but they start to use it so much try so hard to show it off that it just becomes a headache. This could've been a great film if they had focused on a good story and characters with as much focus they put into the mindless action.
