Review of Van Helsing (2004) by Joseph W — 06 Oct 2011
What happens when you take an a good premise (that being a tribute to the universal horror films) and give the people behind the Mummy to work on it? You get, well this. The most disappointing thing about this movie is how unfaithful it is to it's subject matter.
What I mean by this is quite simply it's genre: action. The horror films of the 30s and 40s where obviously not this. Not only that but the over use of cgi is ridiculous. Every scene pretty much has cgi in it.
Because of this, the movie looks more like a video game than a movie. Not only that but the script is awful, the acting is wooden or hammy, and the movie is far too fast passed. There are tons of scenes where every one is talking too quickly so it can go back to more boring cgi action scenes.
This is more a portrait than a movie, a bland uninteresting portrait.
