Review of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2001) by Chun W — 19 May 2009
Much better than original counterpart. In many aspect! Especially D's costume!
This movie alone has put the Vampire Hunter D series right up to my top 5 all time favourite Japanese comic book heroes, probably second after "Bio Booster Armour Guyver".
This sequel has very impressive animation, awesome action scenes and awesome new characters and designs and big improvements on the old characters like D and Left-hand. As well as a very impressive soundtrack, voice acting talents and is very good at emotionally drawing you in (this is mainy due to the very well written soundtrack).
Action scenes are tense, bloody and epic (as you'd expect from an action horror OAV), dramatic scenes makes you emotionally drawn in and the music really contributes to this.
The ending is one of my favourite scenes, as D cooly rides off into the sunset as he says goodbye to the grandchild of an old friend you get a epic, heroic and uplifting feeling, but at the same time you feel slightly saddened due to the fact D never aged all that time and is going to forever walk the earth as this lone half vampire hunter, who can never have a normal life. And again the music with this scene really matches up well!
But there is a nice touch of humour at the end from D's parasitic left handed friend...
"Well that's nice, you're not so bad after all... you just .... dress bad....".
Reference to his costumes past maybe? The terrible light blue suit with the leather pants on the outside worn in the original..
Overall I personally reckon Vampire Hunter D bloodlust is a great addition to the Vampire Hunter D franchise.
