Review of Vampire Academy (2014) by Jun M — 11 Feb 2014
I absolutely LOVED the "Vampire Academy" book series. I was obsessed to be honest. I was counting down the days until it came out in the theaters! When the day came and I watched it, I decided it was "okay." They put WAY too much emphasis on the while "Vampire" thing. It was a big part in the book but it wasn't constantly brought up. In the book the two main girls have a "bond" and Rose can feel Lissa's emotions and can occasionally get inside her head. I was eager to see how they were going to pull that off and I think there's so much they missed by not including the bond more.
The romantic aspect of it was well, terrible to be honest. In the book, the love Dimitri had for Rose was deeper than how they reflected it. It's hard to explain but in a movie they can't express the feeling of being with your soulmate and pass it off as a schoolgirl crush. I never believed once that Dimtri loved Rose in the movie, which is sad because that was one of my favorite things about the books. Sara Hyland's performance as the meek, shy girl was decent but when she was turned Strigoi (evil, undead vampire) she actually looked ridiculous. They had good casting but I thought that "Dimitri" wasn't attractive at all but that's really a matter of opinion. Zoey Deutch (Rose) was not very good at her snarky one-liners. There is too many details in the book to make this good enough for me.
