Review of Vampire Academy (2014) by Lyndsey T — 16 Feb 2014
I find it interesting to compare those who have not given this movie great reviews to those who have. I suppose it is a critics job to take themselves too seriously, but for the others who have praised the achievements of this movie all have one thing in common: they understand what this movie does well and what it is trying to accomplish.
One of the reviews I read focused on him having to pay for his own ticket, because the movie wasn't screened for critics, and I also read something about the Dhampir protecting their Moroi taught the pro's of slavery and was sending the wrong message to the youth that was watching the movie. From a person who went and watched this movie and loved it, understand that the message behind VA goes much deeper than Vampires. It is about friendship and loyalty. The Moroi are an ancient, peaceful vampire race who pride themselves in using their power for good. They do not like using their power for violence. This is where the Dhampir come in. They are the Moroi's protectors. Their life is lead by the credence "they come first". Rose, the main character and Dhampir protagonist, and Lissa, her Moroi, are best friends and share a bond (literally and otherwise) that elevates their relationship. The two are close and have been returned to St Vlad's Academy after a year on the run with one another.
There are 6 books in the series, written by Richelle Mead. Mead has the capability, beyond most authors I have read, to create and write a capable and kick ass female heroine. Rose is an example of one of these heroines. The movie was incredibly true to the first book and the heart of this series. It showcased everything important to what makes this story different than any other I have read or watched. I wish the stigmatism that surrounds YA "paranormal" fantasy was different; but ever since Twilight, if someone even gets a whiff of "vampire" it's instantly categorized and an attempt to piggy back the success of a that particular story. Maybe if we are lucky enough for the second book--Frostbite--to be made into a movie, more of the story will come to light and better marketing and release strategies will come to light. I do think word needed to have been spread a little better in the area I am from. Though some of my friends saw a commercial or two, when I took them to watch it with me, it was a completely different movie than they expected. And they loved it. But marketing, early screenings, midnight releases, a world premiere--yeah, these could have helped. Despite this, it has nothing to do with the quality of the movie. Vampore Academy was fun, smart, and though it contained serious subject matter at times, it understood what it was and didn't take itself too seriously and set us up for a really great franchise, if we are lucky enough.
So if you haven't yet, go on and watch VA today! It's a fun movie and you'll have a good time.
