Review of Valley of the Dolls (1967) by Bob W — 30 Jul 2010
Melodramatic to the point of maudlin at times, this is a soap opera that veered in tone and message from the original novel by the end. Acting is either over the top (Duke) or wooden (Tate). Predictable fare about three gals in show business that abuse "dolls" (downers).
Come to think of it, Valley of the Downers would have been more accurate. The best thing about this movie to me is the Dionne Warwick theme played throughout. It deserves the satire that was made as its sequel.
But it has a life of its own now as 60's camp, partly because of curiosity about Sharon Tate who as we all know was later a victim of the infamous Manson case.
