Review of Valley Girl (1983) by Breann B — 05 Feb 2011
Aged quite well surprisingly. It doesn't take itself too seriously and it's casted perfectly. Sure it can be rather silly at times but keep in mind that this came out in the early 80's which was the decade that defines the word silliness. One part that I thought was maybe a little too hokey was during the classic 80's montage when the two leads were talking and then walked out of the shot revealing a sign that said Romeo and Juliet. At first I thought this was just a tad too much but then I started to remember the beginning of New Moon when Bella was holding Romeo and Juliet in her arms, and then my opinion quickly changed.
I also really liked the soundtrack because it doesn't make the film seem dated even though judging from the way the people in it dress, it is a little. The acting isn't dated however and seems like some of the better acting you wouldn't normally see in an 80's teen dramedy. The scene for example when Nic gets drunk I think is the highlight of the film because of how well he plays it.
I was really expecting to cringe the entire time watching this but I was surprised, this movie actually ain't bad. It's charming, romantic (80's romantic), and really fun to watch. The ending was kinda anti-climactic though but who cares. Watch it.
