Review of Valkyrie (2008) by Kevin R — 16 Nov 2010
We couldn't save the left eye.
During World War II Hitler has control over Germany, most of Europe, some of Russia, and portions of the rest of the world. Some in Germany have decided that Hitler's behavior and cruelty has gone too far and formed a plan known as Operation Valkyrie. The plan is to execute Hitler and bring down the SS. Can the band of German brothers obtain enough support to execute their plan?
"Any problem on Earth can be solved with enough explosives.".
Bryan Singer, director of X-Men, X2, Superman Returns, Apt Pupil, and The Usual Suspects, delivers Valkyrie. The storyline for this picture is entertaining based on its historical premise. The story is a bit drawn out and bland but the acting is marvelous and the cast includes Tom Cruise, Bill Nighy, Thomas Kretschmann, Tom Wilkinson, and Kenneth Branagh.
"Remember this is a military operation, nothing ever goes as planned.".
Valkyrie is a film I have wanted to see for some time. I always appreciate watching historical epics and this film reminded me a lot of Defiance with Daniel Craig. Both films had wonderful stories and action scenes and both came across as bland to me. I do recommend seeing this film but it may not be worth adding to your DVD collection.
"It will be a catastrophe.".
Grade: B.
