Valhalla Rising can be easily summed up in four words: brooding, muddy, violent, and slow. Very, very slow. The film definitely has an air of intrigue about it, but it inevitably lulls you into a daze until some random act of violence is done to snap you out of it.
The darkening filter and pervasive dreariness doesn't do the film any favors either. In the end, Valhalla Rising feels like a film that wants to do something great, but just can't figure out how to go about pulling it off.
