Review of Valhalla Rising (2009) by Pig B — 21 Jan 2011
First 30 minutes=awesome. Like a more stylized mid-period Pasolini film. Then Refn decides to remake Aguirre: The Wrath of God with Vikings while using the throw-back montage editing from the last 10 minutes of Apocalypse Now for the entire last hour of this movie.
It's tedious; pretty, but tedious. It's a bad sign when your attempt at something avant-garde-like is both unoriginal and heavy-handed in its message. And don't get me stated on the portrayal of its Native characters.
