Review of Valhalla Rising (2009) by Crispy S — 05 Feb 2011
I've started writing this about four times and I can't find the right words for the kind of movie that this. It's sort of like Koyaanisqatsi. It's almost like you're watching a museum, a piece of art.
I've read a few reviews from people and a common comment is that it had no plot. I don't entirely agree with that. It has a plot, it's just very raw. This whole movie is very primal. I can see where someone would put this in hoping for a more hardcore version of The 13th Warrior and finding nothing close to that.
The main thing that stands out for me, apart from how bare it is in terms of dialouge, is the tension. This movie is so tense. I felt tense watching these characters in such a unforgiving and brutal setting.
I personally thought it was very good. I also think a lot of people would find it pretentious and dull.
